国際交流センター長からのご挨拶
ここ数年、誰にとっても大変な状況が続いています。教育面では、学生は留学をはじめ、当たり前だと思っていた大学生活を奪われました。パンデミックのために次々とプログラムがキャンセルされ、国際交流センターのスタッフ一同も心を痛めています。しかし、奪われたチャンスにこだわっていてはいけません。それよりも、今、自分たちがコントロールできることに集中し、行動するのです。
ここで、アメリカの作家、マーク・トウェインの名言を紹介したいと思います。
“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor, catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”
「今から20年後、あなたはやったことよりも、やらなかったことを後悔する。だから、はらみ綱を解いて、安全な港から出航し、貿易風を帆に受けよ。探検し、夢を抱き、発見せよ。」
マーク・トウェインは、19世紀末のアメリカで最も有名で認知度の高い人物の一人でした。ジャーナリスト、作家、講演者として世界中を旅し、そのユーモアとウィットで聴衆を魅了したことで知られています。彼はグローバルな視野を持つことの重要性を認識し、偏見や偏狭な考えをなくすために、外国文化を体験することを強く奨励しました。また、健全で寛大な人間観は、一箇所に留まっていては育まれないと強調しました。
留学というと、外国語の習得だけを連想する学生が多いでしょう。確かに語学の習得は留学の重要な要素ですが、より大きな意味では、時間の整理や不測の事態への対処、自立と責任感の習得など、人生の重要な経験を積むことができます。新しい環境に身を置くことで、あなたは自分に新たな挑戦を課し、自分という人間を更に成長させることができるのです。そして、マーク・トウェインが言ったように、自分を取り巻く世界に対して、もっと広くて寛大な視野を持つことができるようになるのです。
まだまだ先行きが不透明な時代は続きますが、「安全な港から出航」し、自分の可能性を追求するチャンスはあります。まずは国際交流センターで自分の未来への扉を開き、最初の一歩を踏み出して下さい。さあ、探検し、夢を抱き、発見しましょう！
The past few years have been difficult times for everyone. In terms of education, students have been robbed of their university experience, including opportunities for international exchange. The staff of the Center of International Exchange were also heartbroken when program after program had to be cancelled because of the pandemic. However, we cannot dwell on opportunities that have been snatched away from us. Instead, we must take charge of what we can control and focus on in the present.
Here, I would like to introduce one of my favorite quotes by the American author, Mark Twain.

Mark Twain was one the most famous and recognized people in America in the late 19th century. He traveled the world as a journalist, writer and lecturer, and was known for winning over audiences with his humor and wit. He recognized the importance of having a global perspective and strongly urged people to experience foreign cultures to fight prejudice and narrow-mindedness. He stressed that wholesome and generous views of mankind could not be nurtured by staying in one place all your life.
Many students associate studying abroad with learning a foreign language. While learning a language is certainly an important part of studying abroad, the bigger picture involves gaining important life experience such as organizing your time and dealing with the unexpected, and learning to be independent and responsible. You are challenging yourself by putting yourself in an unfamiliar situation, and you will be rewarded with personal growth. And above all, as Mark Twain said, it will give you a broader and more generous perspective of the world around you.
We still face uncertain times, but there will be opportunities to “sail away from the safe harbor” and explore your potential. The Center for International Exchange is a good place to start your search. Explore. Dream. Discover.
